Lord Lexden has taken part in a Lords debate on the centenary of the First World War. The debate, which dealt specifically with the contributions made to the war by poets, artists and musicians, took place in the Grand Committee Room of the Lords on November 26.
Alistair Lexden recalled the close ties that united Germany and Britain until almost the very eve of war.
Among other points, he made reference to two Irish painters, John Lavery and William Orpen, who were prominent among the official war artists; their work is an example of the important cultural contribution Ireland made to the war.
