The Battle of Passchendaele began on 31 July 1917, and ended three and a half months later on 10 November. It is widely regarded as the most horrific battle in the modern history of Western Europe.
The war reporter Philip Gibbs, who was there throughout, observed that “nothing that has been written is more than a pale image of the abomination of those battlefields, and that no pen or brush has yet achieved the picture of that Armageddon in which so many of our men perished.”
The House of Lords held a debate on 19 October to mark the centenary of this terrible battle. Follow the link to read Alistair Lexden’s contribution to the debate…. theyworkforyou
