Northern Ireland was the subject of Alistair Lexden’s final speech in the 2015-17 Parliament.
The Province’s devolved government collapsed in January; prolonged discussions following an election in March have failed so far to produce agreement on how it could be restored.
The Northern Ireland (Ministerial Appointments and Regional Rates) Bill, which went through all its stages in the Lords on April 26, provides for an extension of the period during which talks can continue and for the collection of local taxes under the Province’s rating system.
Like others who spoke in the debate, Alistair Lexden expressed doubt about the prospects of returning to full devolution in the short term; other approaches might need to be considered.
