On November 14 a short debate was held in the House of Lords on the British egg industry whose continued commercial success and competitiveness are threatened by an EU Directive which comes into force on 1 January 2012.
The threat arises from the failure of some EU countries to comply with new higher standards of egg production which British producers are meeting in full, and as result incurring much higher costs. Lord Lexden highlighted the effects of the Directive on egg producers in Northern Ireland.
