Ian Gow gained political immortality as Margaret Thatcher’s PPS during her first government from 1979 to 1983. He was her closest confidant and counsellor. He was also an unyielding opponent of the IRA, believing that its total defeat was vital if Ulster was to have a stable and successful future in the UK where it belonged, governed in his view in the same manner as other parts of the country. Devolution had no place in his political creed.
