The Battle began on 1 July 1916 and finally came to an inglorious end on November 18 that year. On March 14, Alistair Lexden opened a short, one-hour debate in the Lords on the suffering that gallant soldiers on both sides endured and on the Government's plans to commemorate the centenary of the Battle.
