On March 5, Lord Lexden visited Christ the King Sixth Form College in Lewisham under the aegis of the Lord Speaker’s ‘ Peers in Schools’ Outreach Programme, of which he is strong supporter.
The College is a Catholic institution which teaches students from a wide range of backgrounds who want to pursue their education in a faith setting. Interest in politics at the College is being fostered through the dedicated work of a former student, Jason Ochere, who organises discussions and visits by outside speakers.
Alistair Lexden said that he was acutely conscious of the need to tackle the widespread disillusionment with politics and politicians that exists today. Young people could help transform the situation by getting involved in politics and bringing their enthusiasm to bear on it.
Discussion focused on the importance of raising standards in public life and of getting today’s politicians to pay proper heed to the priorities of young people.
Would they feel greater confidence in the second chamber of Parliament if it were elected rather than appointed? Several of the students thought so, but others recognised the value of the knowledge and expertise that nominated members of the Lords brought to debates and to the detailed work of scrutinising legislation in particular.
